The Boyfriending

So we've been seeing each other for a while, and as a little gift he made me something out of glass for my office. Just something small. It is beautiful. It is sitting on my desk right now.

"What are you going to tell them about the artist, if they ask?"

"I'll tell them that my Boyfriend made it."

…and then Immediately Regretted It. All I could think of was that scene in “Young Frankenstein” where Frau Blücher belts out “HE VAS MY... BOYFRIEND!” Has it been too short of a time for me to Boyfriend him? He looked dazed for a second and my face erupted with some form of "I'm sorry" or another.

"No, it's okay. I like that you said that."

There are rules, it seems, as to when and where it is proper to Boyfriend or Girlfriend people. I have no idea what the etiquette is and have always seemed to flub it. One guy took such umbrage with the term that I actually broke up with him because even after dating for four months—monogamously and seriously—he still bitched when I used it. Boyfriend. There is something awful about saying the term out loud for the first time… as if it were a binding legal clause and not the term defining the man that you are seeing. I hate that, but I like having a Boyfriend.

People seem to get all fukt up over titles... don't they? It's almost a dance that we do with others... isn't it?

I love "boyfriend." I want a boyfriend. I'm trying to make a poor, unassuming man my boyfriend. Found out yesterday that there are, apparently, no longer rules for first kisses. ;)

Yeah. I totally feel lost with the whole dating rules. Seems like everything gets tossed out a window now a days so its just good to keep the lines of communication open and assume NOTHING until you've both talked about it and come to an understanding. Ugh.

I like this quote from the book "Manning Up" that I read recently: "Freedom turns out to be just another word for nothing left to assume."

I don't know if it's because I live in the south, or because I'm OLD, or what, but the word "boyfriend" is starting to take its toll on me.

And yes, he and I have talked about this. I'm not just bitching about it on the innerwebs. :)

Serial: is it because you'd rather have a fiancee at this point? ;)

I had to tell my boyfriend that I wouldn't sleep with him anymore unless he started calling me his girlfriend. We've been happily dating for over 6 years and the ring should be coming any day.

Blackmail works every time... (this is probably not true for most people).

Yes. Or maybe a hubband.

No point dancing around it.

I'm not getting any younger!

(Jesus. I can't believe I'm THAT chick. *sigh*)

I really think your over thinking it. And you never know, he may have loved being called that. I mean he made the gift which is also pretty full on.

ahhh the dreaded DTR (define the relationship) talk! my bf and i are both terrible at talking about relationship things, so we dated for nearly 3 months before finally using the b- and g-words :)

I can relate that too because I have a friend and he is my "boyfriend" and I'm his "girlfriend" too but were not lovers or couple it's just an endearment for a close friend.

We seems to be like that all the time until such time that he found someone whom he really loves and I as his "girlfriend" was left behind and it hurts me that badly:(

I'm just hoping for his happiness and I do hope that he will never regret it in the end.
